Alec Johnson, music specialist with The Music Therapy Center of California

Alec Johnson

Alec was born in Big Bear Lake, California and attended Berklee College of Music in Boston and Spain. He completed his clinical music therapy internship at The Music Therapy Center of California in 2023. Alec was trained in music at an early age, and quickly learned the potential music has to uplift the spirit as well as provide functional benefit to non-musical aspects of life. He has also always had an interest in how the brain works, and enjoys reading and reflecting on such concepts. The practice of cultivating oneself and being of service to the community is very important to him. These four interests have naturally led him to the study of music therapy. He plans on contributing to the field by conducting research in Neurologic Music Therapy, providing therapy to those in need, and creating programs that enrich the community.

Alec enjoys helping those with developmental disabilities, autism, and brain injury to help them develop their abilities. Offering palliative care to those with terminal illness and offering guidance in their transition to death is work he finds great honor in. He also has a fierce passion for education, and enjoys helping to facilitate development in children and young adults.

Alec also enjoys working with those who wish to optimize their personal and professional life. He intends to help equip people with the tools, resources, and knowledge required to live meaningful and fulfilling lives.

Serving the community, climbing mountains, training jiu jitsu and calisthenics, having profound conversations, living life with vigor, and cultivating plants and animals with bare feet in the earth is among Alec’s greatest passions.

“Music therapy can do so much for an individual and the community as a whole. It can help to facilitate language development, motor learning, sensory-motor integration, emotional regulation and expressivity, social skills, memory, and attention. Musical activities and learning can help to bring people together to nurture healthy social connections, cultivate good character, and develop steadfast discipline. Furthermore, when music education or clinical therapy is facilitated by a neurologic music therapist, the benefits of the musical training are greatly enhanced. They can also help to tailor the training to an individual’s specific needs and desires. Ultimately, music therapy can help a child or adult to build a robust nervous system, which will serve one very well for the rest of their life.”
